Is Your Website Ready for the NEXT Holiday Season?
This past holiday season, did you “shop ‘til you dropped?” Were you out there walking the malls, often tired and frustrated looking for that perfect gift? And, were you stuck in traffic en route to the mall, wasting precious gas?
This year, many consumers did more of their shopping online, especially on Cyber Monday, the Monday after Thanksgiving. Cyber Monday is becoming the new Black Friday, and in 2011, Cyber Monday sales rose 22% from 2010, topping over $1.25 billion in sales. Internet holiday sales jumped 15% over 2010. And, over 15% of on-line shopping was conducted on mobile devices, smart phones or tablets. It wasn’t so long ago that many people considered internet shopping new and somewhat dangerous. Wow, how things have changed. Daily emails from retailers plugging gift ideas and discount specials, social media and bloggers have all affected those important purchase decisions.
While a website is limited because it can’t provide feedback from that all-knowing salesperson, a well-designed site can give the necessary product information and help a consumer’s comfort level and experience.
To achieve good online sales results, first, it is essential to drive consumers to your website through a digital plan featuring S.E.O (search engine optimization), paid search and/or advertising. Then, design a website offering the optimal shopping experience. Try to replicate the ideal in-store experience online. Is the product shown realistically? What personality and imagery have you communicated about your brand and products? Make sure that once a consumer chooses the product, it is easy to pick the desired style and size. Add a how-to-fit chart, designer trends and suggestions and a call for help number to assist consumers. An easy checkout is essential to ensure the shopper follows through the transaction with minimal frustration, and the least amount of clicks possible. And, these days, it is essential for an online retailer’s website to be optimized for mobile devices (SmartPhones, Tablets, etc.). Remember, the shopping experience should be fun and easy.
While most consumers will always do some shopping in stores, many consumers have recognized the benefit of shopping online. After all, there is something to be said for relaxing by the fireplace with a cup of tea (or maybe a glass of chardonnay) and holiday shopping on an iPad! The 2012 holiday season is just 10 months away. Make sure your website is ready to greet these shoppers.
